A Clearer Path for Surviving Spouses and Common-Law Partners: Veterans Ombud Releases Resource Guide

Ottawa ON
Canada

June 11, 2026 - Ottawa, ON – Veterans Ombud Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine released a Survivors Resource Guide providing information on Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) benefits and services for surviving spouses and common-law partners of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Veterans and members.

The Survivors Resource Guide outlines eligibility pathways, program descriptions, and additional support resources to help those navigating life after the loss of a loved one who served.

“Survivors have complained to us about receiving incorrect answers or guidance from Veterans Affairs Canada as they try to move forward after one of the worst moments of their lives. We designed this Resource Guide to pull complex and relevant information into one place. But it is not and cannot be a substitute for consistent, accurate and personalized information from Veterans Affairs Canada.” said Veterans Ombud Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine.

This resource guide is intended to support understanding and navigation of existing programs and services that survivors may be eligible for. The Veterans Ombud continues to raise concerns and calls for improvement related to information for survivors.
