Research Study – Determinants of Successful Transition

Ottawa ON
Canada

Thank you for your interest in this qualitative research study being conducted by the Office of the Veterans Ombudsman (OVO).

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors or programs during the release process that facilitate a successful transition and integration into civilian life for medically-released Canadian Armed Forces members.

Research Objectives

From the “lived experience” this study aims to identify:

  • “Wellbeing” factors which contribute to a successful transition
  • Programs and services which facilitate a successful transition
  • Vulnerable demographic groups who may require additional support to facilitate a successful transition
  • Challenges and gaps in the transition process
  • Success and personal experience stories

Participants

To complete this work we would like to interview a maximum of 20 Veterans who medically released between 2006 and 2014 and feel they have successfully transitioned to civilian life. The participants will include both male and female, Regular and Reserve Force members, and with varying years of service. Participation in this study is completely voluntary and participants’ information will be kept confidential.

Process

The study itself is divided into two parts: an on-line survey, which should take about 20 minutes to complete, and then a telephone interview, which should take approximately 45 minutes. The study will include questions about your experience during transition to civilian life, including the challenges you faced and any positive experiences. The study will take place over the next month.

Benefits of the Study

This research will benefit Canadian Veterans, inform service providers and contribute to ongoing research efforts on transition. The insight into the lived experience of medically-released Veterans and the programs and services that they feel most contributed to a successful transition will provide information to help improve and tailor programs and services being provided to medically-releasing CAF members, Veterans and their families.

Do you wish to participate in the study? Please e-mail us directly by October 31, 2016, at communication@ombudsman-veterans.gc.ca. Our researchers will be in touch within three working days.
